The Etihad Stadium
History
The stadium was initially constructed in Manchester for the 2002
Commonwealth Games. It was planned that Manchester City Football Club would
take over the venue after the Commonwealth Games were over and use it as their
new home field in place of Moss Side's Maine Road stadium.
Following the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games, the stadium
underwent additional development, including the construction of a new North
Stand and the relocation of the running track. The original lower tier was
extended around the end where the temporary stand had been, and the pitch was
lowered to make room for the current lower tier. This huge project added 10,000
additional seats and took a full year to complete. Restaurants and meeting
spaces were among the additional new facilities that were installed.
New Additions to the Stadium
In 2014 the Etihad Stadium went under construction to increase the
capacity of the stadium. The plans were to add a total of 8,250 extra seats to
the stadium to increase the number of spectators. The Chief Executive of the
club Ferran Soriano is said to have liked the idea of Borussia Dortmund’s, yellow wall stand which is often dubbed the best fan experience in world football.
The extra seats however were introduced the north and south stands of the stadium
with 2,000 of them going around the edge of the pitch. These new additions to
the stadium have made it one of the biggest stadiums in England while also offering
great experiences for fans to enjoy while attending the ground.
The Etihad stadium offers a different food and drink experience to
other football clubs. While us Scottish fans are used to a simple pie and a cup
of tea Manchester City offer gourmet food for supporters during the game. Their
extensive menu hosts food such as vegan chilli nachos, pizza and loaded fries
while also offering Heineken Zero to wash it all down. This is a breath of fresh
air for the supporters as their experience of the stadium will only get better
as the football club plan to add more exciting food and delicious drinks to
their turnstiles. Lastly, Manchester city are offering half price food and drinks
inside the stadium between 1pm & 2pm so supporters try get to the game
