Hampden Stadium

History

A short distance from the current location, the original Hampden Park served as both the world's first football stadium and the birthplace of the modern passing game. Since it was established in 1903 and moved to its current location, Hampden Park has played a key role in Scottish culture.

The greatest players in the history of the game flocked to the Mount Florida stadium for a significant portion of the century, mesmerised by the terracing's spectators' fervour and love for their teams and nations.

The oldest international football stadium in the world is Hampden. Many people are surprised by the name's origin, in fact. The name is derived from John Hampden, a soldier in the English Parliamentarian Civil War who fought with the Roundheads in the 17th century. The first Hampden Park site, down the recreation areas next to the Victoria hospital, was overlooked by a terrace of homes that had the name. The Queen's Park committee thought the name was fitting both for their second field—the future home of Third Lanark—and for their first field, which would eventually be renamed "Cathkin Park."

New Additions to the Stadium

Hampden not like other football stadiums was almost demolished as the Scottish Football Association didn’t have the money to keep its doors open. However, after a donation from two Scottish natives they were able to keep the door s open and now the SFA think it is ‘ripe for redevelopment’ in a plan to bid for the world cup in 2030. The plans that are put in place is to move the east and west stands closer to the pitch to give supporters the best experience. Although it hasn’t been disclosed the size of the remodelling or the cost of it Scottish fans can be hopeful that their national stadium will be modernised soon. With the new developed stadium being 20 ears old now this is the best chance for them to redevelop the stadium.

Food and Drink

Although Hampden doesn’t have a restaurant within the stadium, they do have hospitality experiences  for fans to enjoy. There are three course meals available for supporters visiting the hospitality while also having many different drinks to chose from such cocktails, beer and soft drinks. This can also be enjoyed while you enjoy the live entertainment that is put on every week. It doesn’t just stop their as once the supporters have enjoyed all that is to offer inside the stadium, they can step out to some of the best seats in the stadium and sook in the atmosphere before the game.
